LOST in Translation
Attended this Talk entitled," Discover The Creativity In You By Korean Graphic Designer" at Jalan Besar CC. Speaker was a Korean graphic designer Asaka Arai.
When they stated that the "language Medium", presumably the language the speaker will be delivering his talk, would be in english, I didn't realised that there will be a translator beside him translating his words into english.
I can see that the fella got some good stuff in him, but the translator seemed to be a little bit off the marks. Everytime when he speaks, you can see the joy and excitement in his face, but the words that we got, translated into english, were flat and unexciting. I am quite sure not all that came out from his heart and mind, into the translator's auditory senses and out through his mouth were not totally the faithful words that the speaker meant to convey. Well, mostly the emotion got filtered off via the translating mouthpiece.
Overall it was quite a good talk plus a little "hands-on" where all attendees were instructed to design something twice, one from a triangle and another from a circle. Our works were then displayed to the whole class and the "designer" made to explain his design. Quite interesting actually, especially when the Korean Speaker tried to decipher each and every motive of the designer as depicted from the impromptu design.
Some complain about the venue (organiser please take note):
1. Door of room activates a loud alarm everytime somebody leave or enter the room,
2. If you need an intrepreter, then say upfront in the copurse description,
3. Organiser did not provide speaker the means to showcase his works, so no showcase,
4. talk did not end on time,
